The Southern California SGNA Conference will be held at the Great Wolf Lodge Conference Center, on October 18, 2025.

Medical Director
Dr. Phuong T. Nguyen, M.D., is a board-certified gastroenterologist by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology and the Medical Director of Hoag Advanced Endoscopy Center and a therapeutic endoscopist in Newport Beach. She has clinical interests in interventional endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), endoscopic bariatrics (weight management), gastrointestinal oncology (pancreatic tumors) and pelvic floor health. Dr. Nguyen is a nationally recognized expert in the field of gastroenterology, and she is one of Orange County’s most experienced physicians in the use of minimally invasive gastrointestinal procedures, including her expertise in the outpatient imaging procedure EUS and endoscopic interventions for the treatment of GERD and obesity. Additionally, she is the original co-founder of a nonprofit organization, Association of Women Endoscopists (AWE), which promotes education in the field of gastroenterology, both locally and internationally. Dr. Nguyen graduated from the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed an internal medicine internship and residency at the University of Pennsylvania/Graduate Hospital. She completed a fellowship in gastroenterology and therapeutic endoscopy at the University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Jennifer Phan is a board-certified gastroenterologist serving as the Medical Director for the Hoag Irvine Advanced Endoscopy Center, Director of Bariatric Endoscopy and Program Director of the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship. She completed her gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy fellowship at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and specializes in complex diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy including management of pancreaticobiliary diseases through use of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), removal of large polyps through endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic management of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and Barrett’s esophagus, and complex defect closure via endoscopic suturing. Dr. Phan has special clinical and research interests in the endoscopic management of obesity and metabolic disorders such as diabetes and fatty liver disease. Dr. Phan’s multidisciplinary approach to bariatric endoscopy provides patients a minimally invasive option for weight loss through a procedure called endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), or revisional procedures for patients who experience weight regain following bariatric surgery. She provides cutting-edge endoscopic procedures for patients with Type 2 diabetes through duodenal mucosal resurfacing (DMR). Dr. Phan was inducted into 2021 class of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Young Physician Leadership Scholars Program and the 2022 class of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Leadership Education and Development program for distinguished female junior faculty. She sits on the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Center for GI Innovation and Technology (CGIT) and serves as Women in Endoscopy (WIE) Committee Chair of Industry Relations. She is active in the ACG, ASGE, AGA and American Bariatric Endoscopy (ABE) societies. She has given many national and international lectures, and has authored numerous peer-reviewed papers and reviewed articles on the above topics as well.

Dr. Barham Abu Dayyeh serves as the Executive Director and Associate Dean for Innovation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. In this role, he leads strategic initiatives in interventional gastroenterology, with a focus on the integration of advanced technologies to elevate the standard of patient care. Dr. Arsen Osipov is a nationally recognized gastrointestinal medical oncologist and pancreatic cancer translational investigator whose work has significantly shaped the landscape of multidisciplinary cancer care. As Medical Director of Pancreatic Cancer and of Multidisciplinary Cancer Programs and Integration at Cedars-Sinai, he has built and leads the institution’s flagship Pancreas Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic and Precision Medicine Program. This innovative, patient-centered model—offering same-day diagnostics, specialist evaluation, and clinical trial enrollment—has accelerated care timelines dramatically and achieved trial enrollment rates three times the national average. Dr. Osipov also holds academic appointments at Johns Hopkins University and UCLA. In parallel with his clinical leadership, Dr. Osipov has established a prolific translational research portfolio centered on immunogenomics, targeted therapies, including KRAS, and tumor microenvironment modulation in pancreatic cancer. His awards and funding by the NIH and ASCO, and has led multiple high-impact publications in journals such as Nature Cancer and Gastroenterology. His work has contributed to novel clinical trials, including unique immunotherapy combinatorial strategies, CAR-T approaches, and patent-pending technologies, including the AI-powered platforms for cancer prognosis prediction. As a mentor and educator, Dr. Osipov trains the next generation of physician-scientists. Dr. Buxbaum is a national leader in the fields of advanced endoscopy and pancreatology. He is the lead author of national guidelines for the care of patients with disease of the bile duct and pancreas. His research interest includes contrast endoscopic ultrasound, new methods to diagnose gastrointestinal cancers at early phases, and cutting-edge strategies to manage pancreatitis. He serves as Associate Editor of the leading endoscopy journal, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, has led multiple high-impact clinical trials and has an active research program funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Buxbaum performs complex endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), pseudocyst and necrosis management, complex tissue resection including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and double balloon enteroscopy, Additionally, he actively manages patients with complex diseases of the pancreas, bile duct, and small bowel.
